Global affairs is the study of the complex processes that link nations, economies, societies, cultures and people as they confront a world of interdependent challenges. It encompasses the fields of political science, history, economics and other social sciences as well as the arts. The major offers students a comprehensive background in the international system, and an opportunity to tailor their studies by choosing either a thematic or regional concentration. The program also includes a language requirement and an internship option.
Global Affairs majors are prepared to make a difference in the human community and address global issues by combining their knowledge of diverse influences on different societies with their skills at research, analysis and communication. They are also ready to make a transition to graduate school and pursue a master’s degree in the field of their choice.
Students are advised to complete the introductory courses required for their major in the fall of their sophomore year. Prospective majors are encouraged to begin working toward their L4 language requirement as early as possible. Students wishing to apply for the major should enroll in or pass GLBL 2121 at the time of their application.
The Sacred Heart undergraduate degree in global affairs offers an excellent foundation for students who intend to pursue graduate education and pursue careers in public policy, law, or business. In the private sector, jobs are available in industries that seek to compete internationally and in organizations that provide aid and development services. In the government, opportunities exist at local, state and federal levels, and in multilateral organizations composed of several countries (e.g. the United Nations).
