Climate change is becoming an increasingly urgent global issue, with very real impacts on various aspects of human life. One of the most significant consequences is an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods worldwide. In this context, understanding how climate change affects flood phenomena is very important. The frequency of floods increases in line with changes in extreme weather patterns, which are caused by the Earth’s temperature continuing to rise. This increase in temperature causes an increase in the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor. As a result, the intensity of rainfall doubled in many areas. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, areas that were previously not affected by large-scale flooding are now experiencing a higher risk of flooding. In addition to increased rainfall, melting polar ice caps and glaciers also contribute to rising sea levels. As sea levels rise, coastal areas become more vulnerable to seawater intrusion, which can make matters worse during times of heavy rainfall. This causes tidal floods which increase the frequency of floods caused by rainfall. The effects of El Niño and La Niña are also increasingly difficult to predict due to climate change. These two phenomena can strengthen extreme weather patterns that cause heavy rain or drought. As weather uncertainty increases, the risk of flooding becomes greater, and vulnerable areas experience more severe impacts. In developing countries, this impact is felt more clearly. Inadequate infrastructure and a lack of early warning systems exacerbate the situation. Communities in these areas are often unprepared to face floods, resulting in increased material losses and casualties. Research shows that those most affected are poor communities, which have low adaptive capacity. Flooding also has serious long-term impacts on the environment. Soil erosion caused by flooding can reduce soil fertility, while pollution from waste and secondary chemicals carried by water has the potential to damage water quality. Additionally, aquatic ecosystems are disturbed, which can affect local biodiversity. Meanwhile, the economic impact of increasing flood frequency cannot be ignored. Losses from property damage, business interruption, and recovery costs amount to billions of dollars each year. Not a few companies were forced to stop their operations due to flooding, which resulted in job losses and social instability. In mitigating the impacts of climate change, proactive action is needed. Governments, non-governmental organizations and civil society must work together to improve disaster preparedness. Developing and improving drainage infrastructure, an efficient early warning system, and educating the public about flood risks are very important steps. Increasing awareness of the impacts of climate change and flooding also needs to be embedded in public policy. Implementing strict regulations regarding land use, reforestation and environmental conservation can help reduce the negative impacts of flooding. With these steps, we can begin to reduce the frequency and intensity of flooding caused by climate change, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities in the future.
